[Epic poem] My mother's skirt wind

강대국들의 사상대립이 한반도에 38선 남북분단이 되고

The ideological confrontation of the great powers becomes the 38th South-North division on the Korean peninsula

자유 민주주의와 집단 공산주의는 물과 기름처럼

Liberal democracy and mass communism are like water and oil

서로 경계하고 대립하다가 기회만 노리던 전쟁의 불씨

We were wary of each other, we were at odds, and then there was a war of opportunity.

1950년 6. 25 동란은 북괴 공산주의의 남침이었습니다.

The Korean War of 1950 was a communist invasion of the North.

그 얼마나 많은 애국선열들의 목숨을 바쳐야 했고

How many patriotic martyrs did I have to sacrifice?

그 얼마나 이산가족에 피눈물을 흘려야만 했든가

How many tears of blood did you have to shed on the separated families?

동방의 횃불 자유 대한민국은

Torch Freedom in the East

6. 25 UN참전국으로 지켰고

6.25 as a U.N. combatant

조국위한 전몰장병의 목숨 바친 자유민주주의의 땅입니다.

It's a land of liberal democracy, dedicated to the life of a fallen soldier for his country.

전란에 휩싸이던 피난시절

during the war-torn days of refuge

굶주림에 헐벗은 강산을 지키며

Protecting the naked mountain from hunger

어린자녀들의 배움터를 천막 속에서라도

Even if it's in a tent,

그 시기를 놓치지 않았던 교육 열기를 잊을 수가 없습니다.

I can't forget the enthusiasm for education that didn't miss that time.

먹을 것은 없어도 배워야 산다고

Even if you don't have anything to eat, you still have to learn, right?

학업을 독려 했던 그 시절

In those days when I encouraged my studies,

어머님의 치맛바람이라고 합니다.

It's your mother's skirt.

전국에서 교정마다 학부모회가 결성되고

Parents' associations are formed on campuses across the country,

굶주림을 여사로 넘기면서도

Even as I struggled to overcome my hunger,

배움의 등교만은 빠지지 않는

only devoted to one's studies

어린 시절의 향학열기가 있었기에

In the heat of childhood learning,

대한민국은 척박하기만 한 강산을 일구며

The people of the Republic of Korea have created a barren land and a naked mountain

경제계발 5계년 계획 실현으로 산업단지가 조성되었습니다.

The realization of the five-year economic development plan created an industrial complex.

초고속 통신망. 최첨단 전자산업에 이르기 까지

High-speed network, high-tech electronics,

조선소중공업. 자동차산업. 석유화학 공업단지가

Shipyard Heavy Industries, Automotive Industry, Petrochemical Industrial Park

불같이 일어난 격동의 그 시절

those fiery days of turbulence

우리도 한번 잘살아 보세

Let's have a good life, shall we?

새마을 운동이 하늘을 울리든 힘

With the power of the New Life Movement to rise vigorously across the country,

어머님의 치맛바람의 교육열기가 있었기에

Because of the heat of her mother's education,

자유 대한민국은 지구촌의 선진국 대열에 우뚝 솟았습니다.

The free Republic of Korea has risen to the ranks of developed countries around the world.

고대역사의 마고할미 뿌리로 전해오는 어머님의 힘

치맛바람의 위력이 교육열기가 되어

The power of the wind is the heat of education

대한민국의 희망은 태평성대입니다.
